Took a road trip from Chicago in the Fall North to Mackinac the Highway calls Cool brews in Milwaukee Sweet curds in Green Bay Autumn colours fill the wind-shield Getting brighter every day Those lakes and sky They get you high We let em in Then life begins On a boat trip out of Munising in the rain Saw the painted rocks then hit the road again Watched the sun set in St Ignace Toast S’mores upon the beach Ann Arbour to St Joseph Made friends you wanna keep Those lakes and sky They get you high We let em in Then life begins Ice blue days And jet black nights Those lakes and sky They’ll get you high Those lakes and sky They get you high We let em in Then life begins Oh Lakes and sky

Corydon 1863 03:32
We fell in love in 63 Beneath the shadow of civil war At St Joseph lighthouse Down by the lake Your brother was fighting with the men Of the 6th and 8th of Corydon You left to nurse the wounded You couldn't forsake How could I let you go? Join that dirty war oh I wish that I could have gone instead While I keep the lighthouse here Living each day in fear Of a telegram saying you're missing or dead You crossed your heart and said you'd be home soon As we watch the sunset from the Warren Dunes Three months pass and not a word The Yankees lost or so I heard Outnumbered and a running for their lives How do we justify the cost of blood shed and lives lost While the pain is born by the few that get to survive How could I let you go? Join that dirty war oh I wish that I could have gone instead While I keep the lighthouse here Living each day in fear Of a telegram saying you're missing or dead You crossed your heart and said you'd be home soon As we watch the sunset from the Warren Dunes Autumn came, wind and rain, swirling round the lighthouse Storms begin I turn my frozen face to shore And see a figure walking out of my dreams You crossed your heart and said you'd be home soon As we watch the sunset from the Warren Dunes We remember friend and foe who fell too soon As we watch the sunset from the Warren Dunes

Singapore Upon the shore Is no more Nothing left to see Chicago burned So they needed wood Took all they could And felled our trees Heard some people saying They think I’m insane All because I’m staying When no one else remains. Lost my job When the saw-mills failed And all the ships they sailed And the fires came And Thank the man For Eroded land That left nothing here But shifting sand I heard some people saying They think I’m insane All because I’m staying When no one else remains. I could run back home The long road home To my parents home In Bangor Maine If I run back home The long road home To my parents home I’d die of shame Now my home lies Beneath this sand And here I’ll make My final stand Of nature’s curse I’ll be the proof Until this sand Buries the roof

Nineteen thirteen in the Fall Something wicked called As sailors came to town All Lake Huron bound But one man he will not board Afeared they all would drown The engineer thought him cowardly For his superstition But he could not just ignore The awful premonition So the Charles S Price Left behind their ship-mate And twenty-eight men set sail For an unknown fate He sighed and memorised All of their names Ready for the next time That they’d meet again November witch Hails from the North Preys on the South Trapped in her icy embrace November witch East Ontario To Minnesota Trapped in her icy embrace November witch And three sisters Sure to get ya Trapped in her icy embrace November witch Ships in the basin All for the taking Trapped in her icy embrace

Box Car 03:09
All across the prairies and north to Illinois He laid down the rail-tracks as a man and boy He sends home his money the little that he can To the father in Merida who’s so proud of his son Each night as he sleeps Though his soul wants to weep He swears he’ll no longer be poor. He’ll move to Chicago Not living like cargo And sleep in a box car no more Dreamed he’d be wed by now with a family But that distant future is oh so hard to see Each night as he sleeps Though his soul wants to weep He swears he’ll no longer be poor. They’ll move to Chicago Not living like cargo And sleep in a box car no more Last night a good friend died slipped beneath a train But that’s rail-road life when safety’s just a game Each night as he sleeps Though his soul wants to weep He swears he’ll no longer be poor. He’ll move to Chicago Not living like cargo And sleep in a box car no more

He pulled a bank job Out in Ohio Then Dillenger escaped from prison twice Fled to Chicago Hiding out there But he could not escape his gangster life From North Dakota Came Pretty Polly Started turning tricks when she was young Now she’s a waitress Still offering specials He met her at The Barrell of Fun He thought “I don’t care what you’ve done Or how you earn your money That’s no one else’s business babe I just want a piece of you A memory or two of you To take with me to the grave While they were dating One July evening Biograph Theatre was the place Federal Agents Lay in wait then When Dillenger emerged they all gave chase In an Alley Those Agents fired He took 4 in the back right where he stood As he lay dying Gun barrels smoking Pretty women dipped their skirts in his blood. They thought “I don’t care what you’ve done Or how you earned your money That’s no one else’s business babe I just want a piece of you A memory or two of you Before they put you in the grave

I head out… to see Got a burning lust in me No harm… do I mean Till something stirs in me All life in my hands Even I don’t understand I hide in plain sight Under the neon lights Welcome to my game Feel the burn again Welcome to my game Prowling the block Wish I could stop But the thrill of it all Is just so inviting Here in my car We’ve come this far It’s too late for turning back Block after block Shock after shock And the thrill of it all Its just so inviting All life in my hands Even I don’t understand I hide in plain sight Under the neon lights Welcome to my game Feel the burn again Welcome to my game Prowling the block Wish I could stop But the thrill of it all Is just so inviting Here in my car We’ve come this far And it’s too late for turning back Block after block Shock after shock And the thrill of it all It’s just so inviting Thrill of it all It’s just too inviting Welcome to my game Feel the burn again Welcome to my game Feel the burn again Welcome to my game Feel the burn again Feel the burn again Feel the burn again

UFO 03:49
Sitting on the front porch, coffee in his hand Strange shapes skittering like June bugs in the night Across the water, bright lights hover They’re dancing all along the south east shore Well his wife passed so many years ago The children moved so many miles from home Cards and phone calls, Christmas and birthdays They can’t take his loneliness away UFO He’d like to meet them UFO He’d like to join them Morning mist becomes blue sky TV news asks what and why Looking for answers reporters come to town Questioning people bout those bright lights in the sky No one seems to see an empty porch and chair Or notice a half-drunk cup of coffee

Grey clouds fill the sky In these ever-changing times As I take a drive to nowhere This city’s seen some rain Had its share of pain But people round here they still care They won’t be hushed, They won’t be crushed Aretha’s in the sunshine That soon will shine on down Smokey’s in the rainfall Like tears from a clown But it won’t last for long This city’s got soul City’s got so much soul I’m feeling kind of lost The car radio’s on They’re playing ‘The Locomotion’ A lady calls me up Says she could use a friend I second that emotion We won’t be hushed, We won’t be crushed Aretha’s in the sunshine That soon will shine on down Smokey’s in the rainfall Like tears from a clown But it won’t last for long This city’s got soul City’s got so much soul This city’s got soul the sun is shining down This city’s got soul The sun is shining down This city’s got soul (x 3)

When I had just turned eighteen In Toledo High, I met a dream And though I was kind of shy The lake brought us closer As the day sped by With shared anticipation, holding hands We jumped right in Into the deep nothing could be better Sharing the rush whatever the weather I was crazy for that lady Into the deep holding one another Sharing those words only shared by lovers I'm crazy for that lady On my way, Princeton beckoned I count the seconds till I come home again We met down by the lakeside And we kissed in Ohio rain With shared anticipation, holding hands We jumped right in Into the deep nothing could be better Sharing the rush whatever the weather I was crazy for that lady Into the deep holding one another Sharing those words only shared by lovers I'm crazy for that lady And now she's just a memory But I wouldn't change a thing Into the deep...

about

A collection of musical stories and accounts of events that occurred around the Michigan Peninsula and the Great Lakes - inspired by vocalist and lyricist Christopher Brown's 2022 road trip.

From Chicago to Detroit via Mackinac Island, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Munising, St Ignace, Toledo, Ann Arbour and St Joseph, Sun-Pinned Leaves spin their tales as the events unfold along the trail.

The listener is taken along a journey embracing natural beauty, lost love and friendship along with stories of war and separation. Further along the way there are encounters with Chicago gangs and night prowlers. Hear a reflective account of a buried ghost town or maybe experience the perils of the mighty lakes, mysterious lights in the sky and missing folk. And that is just scratching at the surface with many sub-plots to fascinate and absorb.

This is the 6th album by the band spanning just five calendar years but all released within a 48 month period. The subject matter gets more compelling and addictive which each release.
